Is your son or daughter in a wedding, going to a special event, or having a special birthday party? If there is a chance that your child will be traveling in a limo, you will need to make sure you are up to speed on the limo rental company’s policies regarding younger passengers.

First of all, kids are kids – if they get to ride in a limo, they will be so excited! It’s hard for them not to be, riding in a limousine is not something they get to do every day! Since this is such a rare occasion, it’s important to lay down some ground rules with your kids before they travel in a limo.

It’s really easy for kids to get caught up in the experience of a limo ride. They need to keep in mind that at the end of the day the limo has to go back where it came from, and needs to be clean when it goes back! I usually use the “it needs to go back in better condition than you found it” line on my kids. I’m sure they are tired of hearing it, but it applies to everything, including an exciting ride in a limo!

As far as the safety issues with kids and limos, it’s very important to talk with the limousine rental company about their specific rules and guidelines before letting your child ride in the limo. As with any vehicle, children should never sit in the front seat. Usually limo drivers do not allow anyone in the passenger seat regardless of their age, because every passenger is a distraction. Make sure children are safely seated in the back of the limousine.

It is a good idea to brush up on the laws in your state about car seats in relation to limos as well as other vehicles, since these laws can vary by state to state. Usually, limos are exempt when it comes to car seat policies. If your child normally uses a car seat or booster seat, talk to the limousine rental company before you let your child ride in the limo. Most companies will either let you bring your own car seat or booster seat, and others have a variety of seats available for you to use. Some companies charge a fee while others offer these as a complimentary service. That’s why it’s best to call before you ride!

My daughter was a flower girl in a wedding a couple of years ago, and was allowed to ride in the limo with the wedding party to the reception. She had a blast, and the limo driver was great! He made sure she was safe at all times, and kept calling her his “co-pilot!” She loved it, and I’m sure your kids will too!
